Creating a mailbox in DirectAdmin

control-panels, email

Create a mailbox when a person or application needs to send and receive mail at your domain. A mailbox is different from a forwarding-only address and is available only when email hosting is included and configured for that domain.

Check access and requirements

Select the correct domain and confirm where its mail is hosted. If its MX records use Google Workspace, Zoho or another external service, creating a local DirectAdmin mailbox does not move delivery there. Check mailbox and storage allowances first.

01 Create a mailbox in DirectAdmin

  1. Open E-mail Manager > E-mail Accounts and choose Create Account.
  2. Enter the mailbox name, such as support, and verify the resulting full address. Check for a conflicting forwarder or other existing mail object.
  3. Generate a unique password and store it securely. Set a reasonable mailbox quota within the hosting allocation and review the sending limit permitted by the server.
  4. Create the account and retain the actual incoming/outgoing server settings supplied by the panel or provider. Avoid guessing hostnames and ports from unrelated tutorials.
  5. Sign in to the supported webmail service and configure mail clients with encryption and SMTP authentication using the full mailbox address where required.

How do I test a new mailbox?

Send a test to an external mailbox and reply from that mailbox. Check both directions, the recipient spam folder and the expected From address. Confirm the domain MX and email-authentication records match the actual mail service.

Resolve setup problems

If creation fails, check a duplicate name or plan limit. If webmail works but delivery does not, investigate routing, MX and mail logs rather than recreating the mailbox. Never share the password by posting it in a support ticket or public application configuration.
