Configure application installers for regular hosting accounts

hosting-suite, development

The application installer inside a regular hosting account lets customers install software supported by that account's control panel. It is separate from creating a dedicated application hosting product. Configure the installer only after checking the actual provider and available server catalogue.

01 Prepare the server and product

  1. Identify the service's panel and confirm its installer is installed, licensed where required and usable from that hosting account.
  2. Enable the provider and product in Hosting Suite. Enable the application's customer tool where the product supports it.
  3. Open an active test service and load the application list. Confirm that application names and versions come from the intended server.
  4. Choose a test domain or unused folder. Check that it contains no existing site before submitting an installation.
  5. Complete the application's required settings, install it and verify the public URL and administration URL. Remove the test installation through the supported installer action when finished.

02 Match the procedure to the provider

cPanel integrates with Softaculous and exposes supported installation, update, backup, restore, staging and cloning actions. Webuzo supports application installation plus a selection of management and backup actions. Virtualmin supports its application list, installation, removal and upgrade actions. DirectAdmin's current native workflow is specifically for listing and installing WordPress.

Plesk account management is supported, but this release does not expose a Plesk installer capability in the account manager. Do not publish a Plesk APS installation walkthrough as a Hosting Suite feature. Customers may have separate tools in their panel, subject to that server's setup.

03 Choose between an installer and an application plan

Use regular hosting when the customer should manage a general hosting account and choose among its available applications. Use the App Hosting product builder when selling a product tied to one selected application with its own installation policy and customer tools. The latter currently provisions through cPanel, even though several other account managers have installers.

What should I check after an application installation fails?

Read the provider's error and inspect the selected domain, path, database availability, disk quota and PHP requirements. Check whether a partial installation already exists before trying again. An install request may have reached the server even if the browser timed out. Do not overwrite a populated directory or delete an existing database merely to clear an installer warning.

After resolving the cause, refresh the installation list and resume using the supported action. Keep installer-created backups and application-level backups distinct from full account backups, since their restore scope differs.
