Creating and assigning a custom block template

wordpress

Create a custom block template when a specific set of pages needs a different surrounding layout. Give it a clear purpose and assign it deliberately, keeping ordinary page content separate from the reusable frame.

01 Define the variation

Decide what differs from the default template, such as a wider content area, a simplified header or a landing-page footer. If only the blocks inside one page differ, a custom template may be unnecessary. Avoid creating a new template for every page without a structural reason.

Use a staging copy for substantial changes and record the existing template assignment on pages you plan to modify.

02 Create the template

  1. Open the Site Editor's Templates area and use the supported add-template action.
  2. Choose the appropriate custom-template option and give it a descriptive name.
  3. Build the frame with the required template parts and dynamic Title or Content blocks.
  4. Keep the Content block where each assigned page's body should appear. Add fixed text only when it belongs on every page using this template.
  5. Save the template, then edit the intended page and select it in the page's Template setting.

03 Test before broader assignment

Preview one representative page and check its title, body, navigation and footer. Test long content, mobile width and any forms or embeds. If the template removes normal navigation, confirm that visitors still have an appropriate way to continue.

Assign it to additional pages only after the first result is correct. Keep a short record of its intended use so other editors do not select it merely because the name sounds attractive.

How should I maintain or remove a custom template?

Editing the custom template later affects all pages assigned to it. If one page needs another exception, evaluate whether local page content or a second deliberate template is the better solution.

If a page appears blank after assignment, inspect the template's Content block before assuming the page was deleted. Restore the previous assignment to recover the display while investigating. Before deleting a custom template, reassign affected pages and verify their public layout so the fallback does not surprise visitors.
