Creating a simple physical product in WooCommerce

wordpress

Create a simple product for one physical item that customers buy without choosing separate priced variations. Set its description, price, stock and shipping data together so the public product page and checkout describe the same item.

01 Prepare accurate product information

Gather a clear name, description, photographs, selling price and stock reference. Measure weight and dimensions using the units configured for the store. Decide whether stock quantity will be tracked and whether backorders are permitted. Save the product as a draft while details are incomplete.

02 Set up the product

  1. Open Products > Add New and enter the product name and useful full description.
  2. Choose Simple product in Product data. Leave Virtual disabled for an item that requires shipping.
  3. Set the regular price and the appropriate tax status and class for your confirmed tax configuration.
  4. Configure the SKU, stock quantity or stock status, and the intended backorder policy.
  5. Enter shipping weight, dimensions and a shipping class if your rate setup uses one.
  6. Add the product image, useful gallery views, a concise short description and suitable categories.
  7. Preview, then publish when the information and checkout behaviour are ready.

When should I use a variable product instead?

Use a variable product when options such as size or colour need their own price, stock or other variation data. A descriptive attribute alone does not create a selectable purchasable variation. Avoid creating many nearly identical simple products if customers need to choose between related options on one page.

Why is the product not purchasable?

Check publication status, price, stock availability and any catalogue restrictions. A visible description does not guarantee that the item has a valid purchasable configuration. Also check whether a plugin is deliberately restricting purchases by customer role or location.

03 Test the customer journey

Open the published page while logged out and check the image, price and stock message. Add the item to the cart, change quantity and enter a representative shipping address. Confirm the selected delivery method and final total. Use a sandbox payment for testing rather than repeatedly creating uncontrolled live charges. Record the SKU and fulfilment details so the person processing orders can identify the same physical item.
