Finding and removing accidental inline formatting

wordpress

Text pasted from documents or other websites can carry unwanted formatting that conflicts with your theme. Remove the specific local formatting while preserving meaningful links, emphasis and heading structure.

01 Identify the source of the style

Check whether the unusual appearance affects one word, one block or every block of that type. A single coloured phrase suggests inline formatting; a whole paragraph may have block-level settings; a site-wide difference may come from global styles or custom CSS.

Keep a copy of the text before cleaning a long article. Note any emphasis, links or specialised notation that must remain, so removing visual clutter does not remove meaning.

02 Clean the content deliberately

  1. Select the affected text and review its inline formatting controls.
  2. Remove unwanted local formatting using the available clear-formatting or specific toggle controls.
  3. Select the surrounding block and reset unnecessary typography or colour overrides when the problem applies to the whole block.
  4. For a heavily contaminated paste, place a plain-text copy into appropriate fresh blocks, then restore only the intentional links and emphasis.
  5. Preview the result alongside neighbouring content and save when it follows the intended design.

What formatting should remain when I clean pasted text?

Use Heading and List blocks for actual headings and lists rather than bold paragraphs or manually typed bullets. Check that paragraph breaks remain correct after pasting without formatting. Recreate tables as proper tables instead of a series of aligned spaces.

Do not use the code editor to remove unfamiliar markup from an entire page without a backup and an understanding of block structure. An apparently harmless deletion can make blocks invalid.

03 Verify and prevent recurrence

Check desktop and mobile previews, then test links that were inside the cleaned text. If the unwanted style returns after saving, investigate a plugin, editor integration or global style rather than repeatedly clearing the same selection.

For recurring editorial imports, agree on a plain-text or clean-paste workflow and a small set of approved block styles. This keeps future articles consistent and reduces the need for one-off formatting repairs that slowly make the site harder to maintain.
