Diagnose a checkout that fails to update shipping, totals or payment options by identifying the failed request or script. Avoid repeated live payment attempts while the page state is uncertain.

01 Record a reproducible example
Note the product, quantity, customer country, selected shipping method and exact action that stops working. Record the time and browser, and whether the customer is logged in. Check whether the issue affects all customers or a particular address, product or gateway.
02 Inspect the failing layer
- Reproduce the issue on a protected staging copy with payments in sandbox mode.
- Check the assigned checkout page and whether it uses the block or classic implementation.
- Review browser Console and Network errors for blocked scripts or failed checkout requests.
- Check WooCommerce and server logs at the matching timestamp.
- Verify that personalised pages and dynamic requests are not incorrectly cached.
- Test recent plugin, theme or optimisation changes one at a time using a controlled conflict test.
Why does changing the address remove a payment method?
The gateway may legitimately restrict currencies, countries, shipping methods or order contents. Confirm the expected eligibility rules before treating the disappearance as a fault. If the method should remain available, inspect its current checkout-format compatibility and request errors.
Should I disable every plugin on the live store?
Use staging for conflict isolation whenever possible. Disabling live payment, security or fulfilment components can create additional problems while customers are ordering. If a production intervention is necessary, use a planned maintenance window with a backup and a documented recovery path.
03 Check the fix end to end
Repeat the original failing action, then test a different representative cart and address. Complete a sandbox order and verify its server-side total, payment reference and notifications. A browser displaying a corrected total is not enough if the submitted order still contains stale values.
04 Escalate with useful evidence
Provide the checkout format, WooCommerce and gateway versions, timestamps, redacted errors and the smallest reproducible test. Remove card details, tokens and personal addresses from shared logs. If a payment may already have occurred, reconcile with the provider before asking the customer to retry. Preserve the working configuration so a later optimisation change does not silently reintroduce the same failure.
