A simple path to HTTPS.

For personal websites, information pages and services that need encryption with domain control verification.

01 / CHOOSE

Start with your domain.

Select a certificate that covers the hostname your visitors use.

02 / VALIDATE

Show that it is yours.

Complete the certificate authority’s domain control verification using an available validation method.

03 / INSTALL

Make the secure connection.

Install the issued certificate on your server and configure your website to use HTTPS.

YOUR DOMAIN. YOUR PROOF.

A clear link between
you and your domain.

Domain Validation focuses on one essential question: can you demonstrate control of the requested domain? Complete the available verification step, and move your certificate request forward.

  • Use the validation method offered for your order.
  • Keep the DNS, website or approval contact accessible.
  • Copy the supplied verification value exactly.
CHOOSE A PRACTICAL VALIDATION ROUTE

Use the access
you already have.

The choices depend on your certificate and domain. Your order gives you the available method and the exact instructions to follow.

01

DNS record

When DNS validation is available, add the supplied TXT or CNAME record at the authoritative DNS provider. Allow the record to become visible before checking again.

02

Website file

Where supported, place the validation file at the specified location on the requested website. It must be reachable by the certificate authority.

03

Approval email

Where offered, use an eligible approval address and follow the authorization link. Keep the correct domain and request in view when approving.

HTTPS THROUGHOUT THE JOURNEY

From the page they read
to the form they send.

A certificate belongs in the whole website experience. After installation, direct visitors to HTTPS and check the resources your pages load so the secure connection stays consistent.

  • Review the main website and its essential forms.
  • Update hard-coded HTTP links and embedded resources.
  • Check the certificate name, chain and expiry in the browser.
A SIMPLE LAUNCH, WELL PREPARED

Three details that
make the difference.

A little preparation helps the certificate you choose become the connection your visitors actually use.

01

The correct name

Check whether visitors use the root domain, www or another hostname. The certificate must cover each name that will serve HTTPS.

02

The matching key

Create the certificate request in the right environment and protect its private key. Installation needs the key that belongs to the request.

03

A renewal owner

Keep the service contact current and watch the active certificate expiry. Paying for a subscription and installing its current certificate are separate steps.

ANSWERS, WITHOUT THE GUESSWORK

A little clarity.
A lot more confidence.

Understand validation, coverage and what happens after you choose your certificate.

What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL Certificates enable data encryption on the internet and allow data to be transmitted securely from a web server to a browser. With SSL, your website can use the https protocol and will display a padlock in end users web browsers to indicate the connection is secure.

Why do I need an SSL Certificate?

SSL Certificates are an essential part of the internet. They not only encrypt communication between your computer and the server where a website is located, but they also provide verification that a site is what it claims to be.

What are the different types of SSL?

There are 3 different levels of vetting that SSL Certificates are based upon. Domain Validated (DV) , Organization Validated (OV), and Extended Validation (EV). The major difference between the types of certificate relates to the information the Certificate Authority, RapidSSL, GeoTrust and DigiCert, requires and validates in order to issue a certificate. The higher levels of certificate require more information, and often is displayed in the browser bar. EV SSL for example turns the browser bar green and displays the organization name to visitors to generate more trust.

What is a Wildcard SSL Certificate

A Wildcard SSL certificate provides the same encryption and authentication features as other SSL certificates but can also be applied to an unlimited number of subdomains of a website. A Wildcard SSL certificate supports the root domain (example.com) as well as its subdomains.

What are the advantages of an EV SSL Certificate?

EV or Extended Validation certificates are the highest class of SSL available and give the most credibility and trust to your website. EV assures consumers that their personal and financial information is protected at the highest levels of authentication. Additional verifications are performed, such as corporate agency record checks, applicant contact info, and whether the business has existed for a minimum of 3 years. EV certificates are best suited for business-critical webpages.

Does a longer subscription mean one certificate lasts for the whole term?
No. A subscription term and the validity of an individual certificate are different. Certificates must be reissued or renewed as required during your subscription, and validation may need to be repeated.
Do OV and EV use stronger encryption than DV?
The main difference is the identity validation. DV confirms domain control, OV also checks the organization, and EV uses a more extensive organization verification process. The encryption used for a connection depends on its TLS configuration.
What is actually checked during Domain Validation?

The certificate authority checks that the applicant controls the requested domain. DV does not verify a legal organization’s identity in the way OV or EV does. It is a focused route to a certificate for an encrypted connection.

Can I use DV for a business website?

A business can use DV when domain control validation meets its needs. If you want verified organization details in the certificate, consider OV or EV and their additional validation requirements.

Which validation method should I choose?

Choose an available method that matches the access you can provide. DNS validation needs access to authoritative DNS records, file validation needs access to the requested web location, and email validation needs an eligible approval mailbox.

Why has my DNS validation record not been detected?

Check the record type, hostname and value against the exact instructions. Confirm you added it at the authoritative DNS provider and allow time for the change to become visible. A record placed in a different DNS service will not satisfy the check.

Can a CAA record affect certificate issuance?

Yes. If your DNS has a Certification Authority Authorization policy, it must permit the issuing authority to issue the requested certificate. Ask whoever manages your DNS to review the policy if issuance is blocked.

Why does my website still show HTTP after the certificate is issued?

The certificate must be installed and HTTPS configured on the website. You may also need to update the application’s site URL and redirect HTTP requests. Issuance alone does not change how your server delivers pages.

What should I check if a browser reports a name mismatch?

Compare the requested website hostname with the names listed in the certificate. The visitor may be using www, a subdomain or another address that is not covered by the installed certificate.

What if I no longer have the private key?

You cannot install a certificate with an unrelated key. Generate a new key and certificate request, then follow the product’s reissue process. Protect the new private key and install the new certificate when it is issued.

How can I keep my DV certificate working after the first term?

Keep track of both subscription renewal and the expiry of the installed certificate. Complete any new domain validation, obtain the replacement certificate and install it at the relevant endpoint before the old one expires.

MAKE THE CONNECTION

The next visit deserves a secure connection.

Choose your domain validated certificate and take the next step toward HTTPS.
